Amelia Daniel

Amelia Bertha Catherine Jacobson Daniel was born September 12, 1911 in Artesia, NM. Catherine was the fifth of six children born to Ms. Kate and Joe Jacobson in Artesia, NM. Her mother wrote for comedians: her father owned a dry goods store. The family moved to Roswell when Catherine was four. She graduated from Roswell High School in 1929. Catherine studied dance for a year at Stephens College in Columbia MO then transferred to OU at Norman with the blessings of her family. Catherine was taught dance privately in Dallas, Chicago, and Oklahoma City.

In 1932 she walked down the aisle with her child hood sweet heart Winston Daniel whos family owned Daniel Paint Glass Her and Winston managed the Cahoon Park Pool for a number of years while raising two boys Joe and Tim.

WIth the knowledge gained from the Arthur Murray Dance School she attended she was able to teach dance and in particular the Jitter Bug at the Roswell Country Club, the USO, and the Women Club. In addition to dance, Catherine was known about town for her Antiquing and decoupage classes in the Paint Pit as was called the back room of Daniel Paint Glass. She also went to Los Angles and brought back skills of gold leafing.

When Winston sold the store the Daniels bought a motor home and began to travel. They toured Canada, Mexico, and down to the Yucatan Peninsula and spent winters there in a fishing camp off the Pacific Ocean.

Winston passed in 1982 tragically. Catherine volunteered at the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Auxiliary Thrift Shop for 56 years. She was a 100 years old when she passed peacefully in her sleep October 8, 2011. She credits her rich long life, her spirit and vitality, and her good health, to dancing, involvement in the community and enjoying her family.

Survivors include sons Jo Winston Daniel and his wife Betty, and Timothy Wilson Daniel. Nine Grandchildren, Neil Lowrey, Steven Lowrey, Jody Beth Shade, Tracy Daniel Nelson, Kelly Daniel Wickersham, Timothy Wilson Daniel Jr., Joe Winston Daniel Jr., Paul Wharton, and Mark Wharton and 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Lonnie Owen will officiate.
