Avery Wilson Jr. was born in Ashland, Kentucky October 23, 1928, to Avery Wilson Sr. and Jenny Ellison Wilson. Avery also known as Bill or Uncle Jr. to his many nieces and nephews; served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1951. In 1956 Avery married his beautiful bride of 52 years, Esther S. Wilson at the Bowen Chapel Church where they met at a picnic. His love of music lead him to play the banjo and write songs and music with the Kentucky Travelers. After he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior, Avery began to use his passion for Christ, and his love for music to compose Gospel songs and work in numerous churches and Christian communities. In 1967 he moved his wife and family to Farmington, NM to begin what later became his life mission, which was to work in the Navajo Reservation, to bring the word of God to the Native Americans. His love and compassion for the Navajo and Zuni tribes lead him later to build three churches, the Red Rock Church of God, Valley View Church of God and the Pine Springs Church of God, which continue to spread the gospel today.
Avery is preceded in death by his parents Avery and Jenny Wilson, brothers Woodrow Wilson, and Ralph Wilson, sisters Mearl Ferguson, Pearl Clark and son Carl David Wilson.
