Rebecca Bette Ann SladeBRA memorial service will be held Thursday, April 10, 2008, for Rebecca Bette Ann Slade, who died April 7, of age-related causes. She was 87.BRBRShe was born February 8, 1921, in Logan, Ohio, to Carl M. and Jessie Brown. She married George R. Washburn on March 26, 1944. He died Dec. 25, 1965. She married John F. Bill Whittington on June 8, 1968. He died in Dec. 1989. She married W.C. Bill Slade on Nov. 24, 1990.BRBRShe graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Her teaching career spanned 43 years, the majority of which were spent at Military Heights Elementary School. She is remembered as a dedicated and nurturing educator whose greatest joy came from teaching young people to read. She was a charter member of the International Reading Association in Roswell, and in 1986, she was inducted into the National Education Association's Southeastern New Mexico regional Hall of Fame.BRBRShe settled in Roswell permanently in 1954. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. She belonged to Petro Club and the National Education Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators, and served a term as its president. An avid reader, she also belonged to the 1941 Book Club. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered with numerous local organizations and was honored for her service with the Assistance League and the Friends of the Roswell Public Library. She also volunteered with the Roswell Museum and Art Center, the Historic Center for Southeast New Mexico, and Lend A Hand.BRBRShe and her husband loved to travel, and together, they took many trips throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. She also enjoyed needlepoint, raising African violets, playing bridge, and shopping. She especially enjoyed attending events at the Spencer Theatre.BRBRSurvivors include her husband; her son Richard Karen Washburn of Sparks, Nevada; her daughter, Becky Rod Slade of Eugene, Oregon; her step-son W.C. Bill Dudley Slade of Los Lunas; her sister-in-law Bebe Brown of Danville, Kentucky; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.BRBRThursday's service will be held at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church at 400 W. Third St., in Roswell. Interment will be in Logan, Ohio.BRBRMemorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Roswell Public Library.
