WRIGHT, BETTY JO SOUTH Betty Jo South Wright passed into her eternal home with Jesus on July 12, 2008, after a 3 year battle with lung cancer. Betty Jo was born on August 24, 1928 in Portales to Blanche and Murry South. She graduated from Portales High School in 1946 and graduated from ENMU in 1950 with a BA in Elementary Education. She married Howard Wayne Wright on December 24, 1951 at the First Baptist Church, Portales. Betty taught first grade most of her 25 year teaching career with teaching assignments in Albuquerque; Vallejo, CA; Toledo, Ohio and Roswell. Her last teaching position was at Monterrey Elementary School and retired in 1989. Bettys passion and love was teaching 1st Grade
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church, Roswell, where she was very active in choirs. Growing up, she was active in church choir in Portales and singing solos at weddings and funerals. She played the trumpet in her high school band. During the 10 years she and Howard lived in Toledo, Betty was the choir director at their church. She was a member of the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees.
Betty Jo was blessed with a godly heritage passed onto her by her parents and she passed this heritage onto her family by loving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with all her heart and her commitment to the body of Christ at each church she served. Her family and friends are comforted in knowing she is completely healed as she is in the presence of Christ for eternity.
She was preceded into the presence of Christ by her parents; a brother, Dr. Rheubin South; and a sister, Irene South Ribble.
Betty was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Howard; a daughter, Valerie Jo Wright Ritchie and her husband Bob of Burnsville, MN; a son, Mark Wayne Wright and his wife Desiree Knudsen, of Russellville AR; five grandchildren: Erika and Ben Elkins of Nashville, TN; Ingrid and David Motter of Dallas, TX; Annie Wright of Russellville; Robbie Wayne Ritchie and Shelby Jo Ritchie of Burnsville, MN; one sister, Marie South Creamer of Garland, TX and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
PServices will be held at First Baptist Church Roswell, on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 10:00am, with Doyle Howerton officiating. Graveside Service will be held at Portales Cemetery at 4:00pm, with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Lagrone Funeral Chapel from 10:00am to 7:00pm with the family present from 5:0
