Calvin Craig

Calvin Craig was born on March 14, 1937 to Rufus Craig and Jewel McClish Craig in Tatum, New Mexico. His family moved to Hobbs when Calvin was three years old. He is survived by his wife Fran at the family home in Roswell, his only child, Nici Austin and husband, Doug, of Roswell, and his only grandchild, Jonah Craig Austin of Roswell. Also surviving him is his sister, Fern Warren of Hobbs and two nieces and one nephew. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother-in-law John Warren.

Calvin left Hobbs to attend Eastern New Mexico University in Portales where he earned a bachelor's degree in education. He then attended Colorado Teacher's College in Greely, Colorado where he earned his master's degree in education. He then taught for two years in Ft. Collins, Colorado before returning to Hobbs where he taught drafting and wood shop at Hobbs High School for 33 years. After school, on Saturdays and in the summer, he also repaired boots and shoes.

Calvin loved to go to the Pecos Wilderness in northern New Mexico and fish for trout on the Pecos and Mora rivers. He started going to Pecos when he was a little boy, and went every summer until the last few years. In his younger years, he also enjoyed hunting deer, elk, antelope and quail.

Calvin and Fran moved to Roswell 8 years ago to be nearer their daughter and one and only grandson. Calvin was very proud of his family.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the dialysis center for their care of Calvin over the last few years. They would also like to thank their church family at Country Club Road Church of Christ for all of their love and support.

A memorial service will be held at the Country Club Road Church of Christ in Roswell on Saturday, May 21st at 2:00 pm. The service will be officiated by Calvin's son-in-law, Doug Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portales Christian Children's Home.
