Catharine Wright Barnhill, age 88, passed away peacefully in Roswell, New Mexico on December 26th, 2013, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on April 17th, 1925, in El Paso, Texas, to Horace and Martha Wright. She was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard where she served as a pharmacy technician during World War II for twenty eight months. After the war, she returned to El Paso and pursued a degree in sociology at the University of Texas, El Paso. She married her husband William Burroughs Barnhill on August 30, 1947 and they were married for 54 years. In addition to raising four children, she worked for several years as a case worker for the New Mexico Department of Human Services. She was a member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Roswell and active in the PEO Chapter B Sisterhood of Roswell. She was very committed to her Christian faith and remained faithful to the very end. She and her husband, Bill, were avid square dancers. They had the opportunity to travel the world. They also wore out two RVs and numerous jeeps exploring the dusty back roads of North America.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Martha Wright, her sister, Frances Sherlin, her daughter, Gail Elisha Anderson, her husband, William Barnhill, and her son, Brian Barnhill.
She is survived by her son, Clayton Barnhill and his wife, Jeannine and their son, Ethan of Roswell her son Chris Barnhill and his wife, Donna of Santa Fe, NM, their daughter, Kylie of Austin, TX, and their son, Brennan, of Los Angeles, CA her grandson, Jeremy Childs and wife, Vanessa, their son Hayden and daughter Jordan of Las Vegas, NV her grandson, Nathan Childs of Sacramento, CA her grandson, Elijah Anderson and wife Stephanie and their son Wyatt and newborn daughter, June, of Chicago, IL her sister, Winnie Matthews of Huntington Beach, CA her sister Elizabeth Masarie of Eugene, OR and her brother, Horace Wright, Jr., of El Paso, TX, and numerous nephews and nieces and many special friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Roswell on Saturday, January 4th, 2014 at 11:00 am. Her final resting place will be next to her husband at the Fort Stanton Veterans Cemetery. Rev. Dale W. Plummer will officiate.
