Charles Benton

BENTON, CHARLES Services are set for Charles M. Benton, age 85, of Roswell, who passed away on September 25, 2011. Services will be held at First Baptist Church, on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Rev. Matt Brooks will officiate, with burial at South Park Cemetery. Military services will be presented by the Roswell Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 and 8:00 am to noon on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel.

Charles was born November 26, 1925, in Ralls, Texas to Charles and Ruby Benton. Both parents have preceded him in death. He was the last of nine children, all but one sister have preceded him

Charles graduated from Ropes High School and joined the First Marine Corps in 1943 to 1945. He saw active duty in the Philippines and Okinawa after training at Camp Pendleton, California. In 1947, he and Gladys Pair married and settled in the Ropes Community, farming and raising 2 boys. The love of ranching moved the family to the New Mexico Las Vegas area in 1957. They lived in Tucumcari, Clovis, Las Cruces and retired in Roswell, NM in 1987. He was involved in Ag Finances at the time of his retirement.

Charles loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and golfing. His faith in God was strong and he loved his family.

Charles is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Roswell and his son Larry Benton and wife Connie. His sister, Margaret Moore of Ralls, Texas. His son James Michael Benton preceded him in death by a few months. Also surviving him are his grandsons: Michael and wife Crystal Benton of Justin, Texas, Chad and wife Melissa Benton of Tucumcari, NM, Todd and wife Karina of Melrose, NM, Bryan Benton of Roswell, NM and Kirk Benton of Carlsbad. As well as eight great grandchildren that are living and two great grandchildren who preceded him in death.
