SMITH, CLARA MAE-Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 5, 2008, at First United Methodist Church for Clara Mae Smith, age 79, of Roswell, who passed away May 1, 2008, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Pastor Archie Echols of First United Methodist Church will officiate, interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Clara Mae was born August 1, 1928, in Roswell, New Mexico to Fred and Madge Blocksom. They have preceded her in death.
Clara Mae married Frank E. Smith, Jr. on August 23, 1950, in Roswell, New Mexico. He also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons: Douglas F. Smith and his wife Jill and Jeffrey R. Smith and his wife Cindy; daughter: Terrye Smith Reeves and her husband Rob; six grandchildren: Chris Reeves, Kristin Smith, Olivia Smith, Paige Smith, Eric Smith and Clarissa Reeves.
Clara Mae began teaching Communication and Theatre at ENMU-Roswell in 1965. As an instructor, her many students loved the opportunity to learn in her class. She retired from ENMU-Roswell with emeritus status in June of 1999, and remained a strong supporter of the campus, working on numerous Foundation projects and committees, as well as bond issue and mill levy election committees.
She received her bachelor's degree in SpeechDrama from Southwestern University in 1950 and a master's degree in Communication from ENMU in 1977. While at ENMU-Roswell, Clara Mae held a number of offices, including Faculty Senate President, Theatre Director, and Chair of the Faculty Evaluation Committee. She presented workshops for students in the RISD and made community presentations on topics such as Organizational Communication.
Clara Mae received the Kosa Award in 1989-90 and the ENMU Spirit of Eastern Award in 1997. She was named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1992 and 1996.
She completed graduate work through the Speech Communication Association and ENMU, and was awarded the Harris Award for Distinguished service to ENMU-R on April 5, 2005.
Clara Mae was also very active in the community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and sang in the Senior Choir, the Silver Chords, and the Chancel choir. She was a life member of the Roswell Woman's Club and Past President of Chapter K, P.E.O. Clara Mae was also a member and past an current President of the Social Order of the Beauceant. She was also a life member and Grand Marshal of New Mexico for the Order of Eastern Star. She was a Parliamentarian and a member of the XYZ Club, Book Club, ENMU-R Foundation Board, and the Roswell Symphony Board as well as the Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
