A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:00am at Westminster Presbyterian Church for Constance (Connie) Berckes, age 70, who passed away on August 15, 20115.
Connie was born July 24, 1945 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Dr. Jonathon and Betty Wood. The family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where Connie grew up and graduated from Bartram High school. She attended Wesleyan College in Macon Georgia and graduated from Medical College of Georgia with a degree in Medical Technology. In 1968, she married Bill Berckes. They moved to Washington DC where she worked as a Lab Tech until the birth of her first son James. They moved to Monroeville, Pennsylvania and had two more children, Thomas and Dorothy. She was active in the Garden City Methodist Church and Women's AGLOW fellowship. In 1983, the family moved to Lancaster, California. Connie became a full time substitute teacher, active member in the community, and Christian Life Assembly Church.
In 1996, Bill and Connie retired to Mayhill, New Mexico as managers of Chimney Spring Camp and later moved to Roswell. Connie was a volunteer for the SW Historical Society, the Auxiliary Thrift Store, a Pink lady at Eastern NM Medical Center, an Elder for Westminster Presbyterian Church, a dancer with the Rac-A-Taps, and a member of the MISLAMO extension club. She also held numerous offices for Presbyterian Women and Church Women United and was secretary for Roswell chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
Connie is preceded in death by her mother, father and one sister.
She is survived by her husband, Bill of Roswell NM, her son James, his wife Kim and 3 grandchildren, Erika, Cameron, and Cassandra, of Lancaster California, her son Tom, of Roswell, and Daughter Dottie and 3 grandchildren, Lee, Lane, and Brendalynn of Deming NM, a brother, Jonathan Wood and wife Jane, and Sister Susan and husband Richard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Westminster Memorial Fund, 2801 W 4th St, Roswell, NM 88201
Arrangements are under the personal care of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
