PHILLIPS, Jr., EARL EDWARD ---Graveside services are scheduled at South Park Cemetery, for 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 24, 2008, for Earl Edward Phillips, Jr., age 87,of Roswell, who passed away March 21, 2008 at his home. The Roswell Veterans Honor Guard will provide the services, with Military Honors. Elks Honors will be performed by the Past Exalted Rulers of Roswell Lodge 969.BRBREarl was born October 27, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, to Earl Edward and Bertha Elizabeth Phillips, Sr. His parents preceded him in death, as well as a brother.BRBRAfter graduating from high school where he excelled in gymnastics and was State champion in the all-round
ision; he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Illinois. His college career was cut short due to the war when he joined the military.BRBRAfter his basic training he was sent overseas and his campaigns took him to France, Italy, Sicily and North Africa. Because of a motor vehicle accident he was assigned to the Military Intelligence and Military Police unit, 1250th AAF-BN-NAFD-ATC-Army Air Force, Casablanca, N. Africa. After completing his military service, he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service as a Customer Relations Representative and Express Mail Manager for the Eastern district. He retired after serving over 32 years.BRBREarl was very active in Military Organizations and served over 30 years in the National Guard, as well as the Reserves. He was Command Sergeant Major of 1st Bn, 200th ADA, NMANG. He joined the New Mexico State Defense Force and served 18 years retiring as a Brigadier General. He was Commander of the Roswell Veterans Honor Guard for many years. Earl was Past Exalted Ruler of BPO Elks 969 and was also State President.BRBRHe was awarded many awards and commendations during his military service including EuropeanAfrican Middle East Medal, Asiatic Medal, American Theatre, U. S. Army Commendation Medal, Medal of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct and many others. His military service exceeded 44 years.BRBRHe was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Officers Association, BPO Elks, and the Amvets.BRBRHe married Doris, on December 20, 1947, in Hays, Kansas, and she survives him at the family home. They celebrated over 60 years of marriage.BRBROther survivors include a son, Eddie Phillips and his wife Sonia; a daughter, K. Suzanne Van Winkle and her husband Richard, and 3 grandchildren, Matthew Phillips and wife Amanda, Robert Roby Van Winkle and wife Jamie and Kelli Van Winkle.BRAlso surviving is a brother, Jack Phillips.BRBRFriends may make memorials in Earls memory to the Elks Charitable and Benevolent Trust, or the Roswell Humane Society.BRBRTo pay your respects online, at www.lagronefuneralchapels.com.BRBR Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
