MISS EDNA RUTH ROWLANDA graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 13, 2008 at South Park Cemetery for Miss Edna Ruth Rowland, formerly of Roswell, who passed away peacefully on November 8, 2008 in Sherman, Texas where she had lived since January 2007. She had moved there to be near her brother, John L. Rowland and his wife, Pat. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1934 to Rev. John L. Rowland, Sr. and Edna Bryant Rowland. Rev. Edna came to Roswell in 1944 with her mother and brother. Her aunt, Edith B. Johnson, ran the Central Grill in the J.P. White Building and the Nickson Hotel Coffee Shop.
Edna attended East Side Elementary, Jr. High and High School in Roswell. After graduation in 1952 she attended Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, where her parents had graduated then complete her Bachelors degree in music at Eastern New Mexico in Portales. She later received her Master Degree in education at Eastern.
Following college she began her teaching career in Key West, Florida, followed by a tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Returning to Roswell she taught at Sunset, Mesa and Monterey from which she retired in 2000. Her career covered 44 years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the music program. She also attended Trinity United Methodist and participated in their music presentations.
She particularly enjoyed Delta Kappa Gamma teachers sorority and cherished her many friends there.
