Memorial services are scheduled for Harry Alfred Machen, Jr., of Roswell, NM, at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 16, 2013, at Peachtree Village, 1301 W. Country Club Road. Harry passed away on August 1, 2013 at age 95.
Harry was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 28, 1918 to Harry Alfred Machen, Sr. and Charlotte Lucille Machen. He married Harriet Pat Shirley Spencer in 1942. Proceeding him in death were his sister Charlotte Machen, his parents, his first wife Pat, and his brother Newman Machen.
In 2001 Harry married Maxine Morrison who survives him at the family home. He is also survived by four children: Donald Machen and his wife, Carole, of Metamora, IL, Christine Wilkes and her husband, Larry, of Edna, KS, Russell Machen and his wife, Ann, of Cortez, CO, and Jane Machen of Argyle, NY, two stepchildren: Lanice White and her husband, Gary, of Roswell, NM, and Teri Caddell and her husband, Joe, of San Antonio, TX, and 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Harry served as Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps as a Radar Technician from June 1943 until March 1946, spending part of his service time in the South Pacific. Harry worked for the Raytheon Corporation in Rhode Island in the capacity of an electronics engineer until his retirement. He and his wife Pat moved to Roswell shortly thereafter. A member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Roswell until his death, Harry also served as a deacon in various churches in Rhode Island.
Harry was a HAM radio operator from the time he was a teenager, and was a member of the Pecos Valley Amateur Radio Club in Roswell. When a HAM passes from this earth, other HAMs refer to them as having a silent key.
