Hinton Kittrell

July 25, 1927 — September 16, 2016

Hinton Greene "Kit" Kittrell, III, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2016, at the age of 89, surrounded by several of his children and grandchildren. Kit lived for many years in Ruidoso, NM, and had recently moved to Roswell, NM.

Kit was born on July 25, 1927, in Columbia, TN, to Mr. Hinton Greene Kittrell, Jr., and Mrs. Alberta Martin Kittrell. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant, TN. Kit had two sisters, and as a boy he enjoyed making models, doing science projects, and playing outdoors. As a young man Kit served as a photographer in the U.S. Army during the end of the Second World War, and was instrumental in documenting the tragic losses of life in European concentration camps. Following the war he attended the University of Arizona and the University of Washington, where he met and married his wife, Phyllis Joy Anderson.

Kit and Joy moved to Albuquerque, NM, in 1960 where they raised three children. Kit served in the Juvenile Probation Office in Albuquerque, and retired as the Assistant Chief of Juvenile Probation after twenty-eight years of service. He and Joy then moved to the beautiful mountains of Ruidoso where his daughter and her family had lived for many years. Throughout his life Kit was motivated by love for his family, a strong sense of patriotism, and an abiding faith. He loved classical music, drama, history, photography, and football.

Kit loved being close to his family and his work as a probation officer led him to place great value on the strength and support that a close-knit family unit provides. He was predeceased by his wife of more than fifty years and two sisters. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Vicki Kittrell Conley, of Ruidoso Downs, NM; Mr. Dave Kittrell, of Dayton, NV; and Mr. Chris Kittrell, of Albuquerque, NM, as well as six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He left us with these words of guidance, "to live your life so you can be happy, give of yourself, and be well-thought of by your community."

Mr. Kittrell was a long time member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Mount in Ruidoso where a memorial service in his honor will be held. The service will be at the church, 121 Mescalero Trail, Saturday September 24, 2016 at 10am. The family has requested that donations be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
