DEVER, JAMES GAYLE --
James Gayle Dever passed away Monday night at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His family was by his side. A 60 year resident of Roswell, James was born in Fulton, KY in 1923 to Neal C. and Blanche Miller Dever and spent his early years traveling between Texas, New Mexico, Tennessee and Kentucky. Much of his childhood was spent in the Hondo Valley. He is survived by Alta, his wife of 58 years; two daughters, Renee Rowlett and husband Larry and Shirley Dever; two sisters, Mary Curlee of Roswell and Nina Balthazar of Buckeye, Arizona; one brother, Glen, also of Buckeye; three grandchildren, Austin, Coty and Rachel; and one great grandson, Greg.
After taking up cowboying at age 14 and proudly serving in the US Navy during WWII, James drove for Bell Gas for 30 years.
He never met a stranger and had a lifelong love for the wilderness. He would have been glad to see the country green from the recent rains and the antelope well-fed. James recently returned from an Alaskan Cruise where he caught a fish at a depth of 200 feet. He entranced his grandchildren with stories of cowboy life and was his great-grandsons favorite plaything. He took great pleasure in spending his mornings with coffee, donuts and conversation with friends. A loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather, loyal friend, and above all a man of principle, James will live on in the memories of the many whose lives he touched.
A funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist, his longtime church, on Saturday at 11am. An internment at Memory Lawn Memorial park will follow. The Reverend Butch Neal will preside.
