SMITH, JANET AILEEN Janet Aileen Smith, born at St. Marys Hospital in Roswell on March 5, 1931, joined family and friends in heaven November 17, 2007. Survived by NAnne, Cheryl; Janet, Zandra and Terry, Carol, Toni and Brock, Christine and John, Mark and Julie; Scot, Casey and C. J., Tonya, Jessica and Joel, Joella, Jordan, Joshua and Amy, Brandon, Caty, Sean, Tory; JB, Sara, Ryan Grace, Chaeli and Keira.
Janet graduated St. Peter Catholic School, Roswell High and New Mexico State University; becoming a beloved teacher and coach for RISD for twenty two years. Janet changed careers graduating Texas Womans University as an Occupational Therapist. She joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Occupational Vocational and Recreational Therapy Department. She published a book for teachers and therapists and wrote numerous journal articles. She came full circle back to Las Cruces Public Schools and RISD as a school Occupational Therapist where she retired. Janet was always a mentor and teacher for all of her students, whether they be young or college age and her therapists who worked with her.
Janets loves were horses, golf, wood working, movies, watching college and pro football. Janet and NAnne designed their retirement home, Leaning Fence aka Casa Bliss, where her love of wood working designs shine. Later in life, one of her greatest loves was Kerry Blue Terriers. Her last two, Addy J and Ganni, survive at home along with her lap miniature schnauzer, Hannah.
Janet was known for her quick wit, her love for a great joke and her easy going personality. She was never bothered by the elephant in the room. Her favorite saying was Sit down and shut up. Were in for a bumpy ride. She remained always a flower child hippie at heart.
A Rosary will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at 10:30 A. M. and a Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00 A.M., at St. Peter Catholic church.
No flowers please. Please give to your favorite charity in Janets name.
