CANON, JOE GLEN Joe Glen Canon, 88, a resident of Roswell for the past 60 years, went peacefully to his Lord and Savior on July 25, 2014. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Christ Church. Lonnie Owens will officiate with interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Mr. Canon was born on June 29, 1926 in Megargel, Texas. He had the joy of teaching up to three generations of students at East Grand Plains Elementary School. His grandchildren joked that you could not go anywhere in Roswell with Pawpaw, without running into several of his former students. Besides teaching for 37 years Mr. Canon was the past President of Chaves County Education Association. Mr. Canon was one of seven children born to John and Barbara McWhorter Canon, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers and three of four sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory, are his loving wife Dorothy they just celebrated 66 years of wonderful and blessed years of marriage, his daughter Katrina C. McCormick and husband Stephen, son Gary Joe Canon and wife Genora. He also leaves granddaughter Julie Coultress and husband Russell, grandson Ryan McCormick and wife Jill. Mr. Canon was also proud of his five greatgranddaughters, Sarah, Emily and Claire Coultress and Kate and Paige McCormick and his stepgrandchildren, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Canon was a proud member of the 32nd Infantry Division serving in the Pacific during WWII. He was wounded in action and received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart as well as ten other medals. After service to his country, Mr. Canon completed his education, earning his bachelors from New Mexico State University, and a Masters in Education from Western New Mexico University. All through his life he continued to serve the military as commander of the American Legion, member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Veteran Honor Guard, Disabled American Veterans and ESGR.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who assisted Mr. Canon during the past four years.
