METCALF, JOHN JUNIORServices are scheduled for 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 8, 2007 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for John Metcalf, age 76, of Roswell who passed away October 4, 2007 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Friend Don Bell of the New Covenant Fellowship Church of God will officiate with Interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.

John, known as Junior to most, was born October 9, 1930, to John C. Metcalf Sr. and Effie Mae Graves Metcalf at the old home place in Chaves County, near Elida, NM. The family had lived in a half dug out, but a new home was built shortly before Junior was born, so he got to be the first of the Metcalf kids to be born in the house. The family moved to Roswell in 1945.

On June 5, 1949, he married the one and only love of his life, Nancy Ridgway. On

June 5, they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. From their love was born five children. Out of that love, the family grew to 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed farming and raising livestock with his family. He set Christian standards and high morale values for his family to live by. Daddy took the entire family hunting and camping. It was a meaningful time for all.

He worked as a foreman for Armstrong Construction for 27 years. In 1980, he began John Metcalf Construction Service. He was known for high quality workmanship and the challenge of a difficult project. He operated his concrete construction business with his two sons by his side. Due to his health, he retired in 1997.

After his retirement, he took on the responsibility of kitchen foreman. He looked forward to each Sundays traditional lunch at his home with family and friends. Anyone was always welcome at his table. He enjoyed having his many grandchildren around his chair. He had gentleness in the way he taught his grandchildren love and respect. He had his quality time by sending mama fishing.

He had many long-lasting friends and never met a stranger. Everyone knew him as an honest and humble man with a twinkle in his eye and a strong hand shake.

Daddys main concern was mamas health and well-being, up to his last breath of life.

John is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, at the family home. He is also survived by two sons: Forest Metcalf and his wife Nelda; Jerry Metcalf and his wife Lenore; his three daughters: Connie Berry and her husband Dale; Bonnie Talbott and her husband Kim; and Terrie Billmaier and her husband Dave, all of Roswell; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother: Elmer Leamon Metcalf and his wife Marie of Roswell; two sisters: Martha Mae Ridgway of Modesto, CA, and Lucille Nunnally and her husband Curtis of Roswell.
