TURNER, JOHNFuneral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Friday, August 31, 2012 at First United Methodist Church for John D. Turner who passed away on August 27, 2012. Dr. Doug Mills of First United Methodist Church will officiate, with interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
John was born to Clarence B. and Nettie Turner on August 25, 1928 in San Bernardino, CA. In 1930 he moved with his parents to Roswell, NM. He attended his first 3 years in school at Washington Ave. School in Roswell. In 1936 the family moved to Ada, OK where John attended school until the second half of his junior year in high school at Ada High in 1944. The family then moved back to California where he finished school at Belmont High School. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After two years in China and on the Island of Guam, he was discharged. In 1949 he went to work at the US Post Office in Roswell. In Oct of 1950 he was recalled to the Corps. He was sent to Korea arriving in March of 1951. He did his service there returning home and to be discharged again in 1952. He returned to work at the Post Office where he remained until he retired in Sept of 1983.
He joined the Masonic Lodge and the Roswell Optimist Club both in 1956. He went through all the chairs of the lodge to become master of the lodge in 1981. He received his 50 year membership in the lodge in 2006. He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies and served as head of each one. In the Optimist Club he held almost every office. In 198586 he was Governor of the New Mexico West Texas District. The last eleven years John worked at the UFO Museum. He enjoyed meeting and greeting the public.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret Margie Turner and his son Cody Turner in 1983.
John is survived by his son Kevin Turner and his wife Alana and three grandchildren, Cody, Rachel and Matthew Turner of Oak Harbor, Washington. Other survivors include his sister Dell Vick and her husband Ray brother: Britt Turner nieces: Mary Rodden and her husband Jack, Suzan Wilkinson and her husband Gary, and Carol Turner nephew: Paul Turner and his wife Kathy. Also surviving is his best friend Jena Amaral.
