Joseph Hammond Iii

April 22, 1916 — December 5, 2015

Long time Roswell resident Joseph C. Hammond III died on December 5 after a brief illness at 99 years of age. Joe Hammond was born April 22, 1916 in Terrell, Texas, to Joseph C. Hammond II and Kate Mae (Gullette) Hammond, the oldest of three sons.

Joe graduated from Terrell High School, and Tyler Commercial College. Upon graduation he worked for the Federal Aviation Agency as a flight service specialist, in both Carlsbad and Roswell.

Joe had many interests and loved to pursue his hobbies as a ham radio operator and astronomer. He was a wealth of knowledge on genealogy, and he loved to assist people who were researching their ancestry. For many years he has been a frequent visitor at the J.O.Y. Center and only gave up dancing in the last few months of his life.

Joe was a member of First Baptist Church in Roswell, and he attended services at Narrow Way Fellowship. He was also a member of the Roswell Masonic Lodge No. 18.

Joe married Sue Whipple, and after her death in 1969, he married Helen Otter in 1976. Both of his wives preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents Joseph Carroll and Kate Hammond, and his brother Frank Hammond.

He is survived by his brother Earl Hammond of Ames, Iowa; six nieces and nephews; and a stepson, Paul Otter.

Services for Joe Hammond will be held on Thursday December 10, 2015 at 10:00 am at the LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Oakland Memorial Park, in Terrell, Texas at a later date.
