Joyce Nelson

NELSON, JOYCE V. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Joyce V. Nelson, age 87 of Roswell, who passed away June 29th at her home. Jason Kraft of West Main Baptist Church in Artesia, NM will officiate.

Joyce V. Nelson was born in Ranger, Texas, August 23, 1920, the only child of Margaret Lilie Rene Smith and Henry Charles La Seur. Her father drowned in 1930. Her mother married L. J. Reischman in 1942. She graduated from Kilgore High School in 1937 and completed one semester at Baylor College Mary Harden Baylor in Belton, Texas.

In 1938 she married Jimmie Walsh. They had one daughter, J. Margo Walsh. In 1945 she and Margo moved to Carlsbad, NM where Joyce worked for the Sunlite Bakery owned by her step-father, L.J. Reischman and his son, Gene Reischman. She also worked for the Eddy County Extension Service as a secretary.

She married Morgan Nelson February 22, 1950 in Carlsbad. They lived on the Nelson Farm in East Grand Plains. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2000 at the Historical Society of Southeastern New Mexico Museum. They were married 58 years. They have 2 daughters, Ann Houghtaling and Jane McLaughlin.

Until recent years, Joyce was active in the First Baptist Church of Roswell, Yucca Garden Club a life member of the National Council of Garden Clubs, Roswell Womens Club, a life member of the Assistance League of Chaves County, Democratic Chairwomen, Eddy and Chaves County 4-H programs, PTA, Eastern Star, and the Social Order of Beauceant. She was President of Roswell Assembly No. 116 in 1976 and 1992. In 1987, she was elected Supreme Worthy President of the S.O.O.B. She also served on many Supreme committees.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, L.J. Reischman, brother, Gene Reischman, and sister Alice Smith and her husband Kenneth.

Survivors include her husband Morgan, daughters Margo Eichwald of Corrales, Ann and husband Sonny Houghtaling of Cottonwood, NM, Jane and husband Weldon McLaughlin of Flower Mound, TX; Grandchildren Ricardo and Theresa Eichwald, Michelle and Michael Goitia, Maria and Bryan Mager, Eddy and Carrie Houghtaling, Stephen and Sara Houghtaling, Paige and Don Stevenson, and John and Natalie McLaughlin. She has 19 great grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Morgan and Joyce Nelson Endowed Scholarship at New Mexico State University, the First Baptist Church of Roswell, the Historical Society of Southeastern New Mexico, or Vista Hospice.
