Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Jan. 6, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Roswell 400 W 3rd St. for Judy Harris, age 67, who passed away December 18, 2013. Rev. Kent Leydens will officiate.
Judy was born in Roswell, N.M. on December 1, 1946, the eldest child of Lawrence and Marion Harris.
After graduating from Roswell High School in 1965, she attended Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., and Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., where she earned a bachelors degree in philosophy.
Judy spent a year and a half working and traveling abroad with the United Nations Jobs Abroad program where she served as a nanny in Sweden a bathroom maid in the Netherlands and a tour courier for Cosmos Tours in Switzerland and Italy.
After earning a masters degree in mass communications from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972, she spent the next decade working in public relations for the University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston and the University of North Dakota Medical School.
In 1981 she shifted careers from PR to the oil and gas business. That same year she moved to Colorado where she spent more than 20 years in Grand Junction, Denver, and Vail, respectively. In 2004, she returned home to Roswell, where she joined the Desk Derrick Club, the Shakespeare Club, and the Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation Board.
Judy is survived by her father Lawrence C. Harris of Roswell brother Scott Harris and wife Elaine of Jupiter, Fla. sister Abby Harris Yates and husband George of Roswell nieces Fawn Harris Lawrence and husband Ben of Grand Junction, Colo., Lauren Yates and husband Per of Plano, Texas, Lindsey Yates Madison of Plano, Texas and nephew Zachary Harris of Tallahassee, Fla. Judys aunt Marguerite Sanders, previously of Roswell, lives in Kansas. Her sister in law Jan Gammill lives in Fruita, Colo. Judy has eight great nieces and nephews, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marion V. Harris.
In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to the Roswell Art Museum Foundation or the Salvation Army.
