LAPLANT, LARRY- After a long battle with cancer, Larry Allen LaPlant, age 78, surrounded by his loving family, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on April 11,2018.
Larry was born December 29, 1939, in Rochester, Minnesota to Ruby Dugstad LaPlant and Charles LaPlant, who precededs him in death. Larry spent his childhood, developing a love for wildlife and the outdoors wandering the rivers, streams and woods around Waterloo, Iowa. This interest motivated him to pursue a degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Montana.
Larry paid his way through college working during the summers as a Forest Service Smokejumper in Missoula, Montana. He served two years in the Army stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama where he initiated a Game Warden Program under the Military Police. While stationed at Fort Rucker, Larry met and married Betty his wife of 52 years. When discharged from the Army, he returned to Fort Rucker where he was employed as the installation Fish and Wildlife Biologist from 1966 to 1978. He was responsible for developing and implementing a fish and wildlife program and worked in conjunction with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Auburn University. In 1971, he received the Alabama Wildlife Conservationist of the Year award.
Larry and his family moved to Roswell, New Mexico in 1978 where he started working for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as the District Wildlife Biologist. While working for the BLM, he became involved in the fire management program and worked various positions working on wildfires throughout the West and Canada. He retired from the BLM as a Multi-Resource Supervisor in 2000.
Larry is survived by his wife, Betty of Roswell, two daughters, Melissa Fox of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Melanie Ikard and her husband Elliott of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Garrett Fox, Chelsey Fox, Keegan Ikard, Addison Ikard and Gracie Ikard and great-grandson, Orion Fox.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, Interment will be 12:00 PM, at South Park Cemetery with a reception at 1:00 PM.
