Marie L.S. "Sally" Harty passed away quietly in Columbia, Maryland on October 15, 2015 at the age of 84. Born in Storthoaks, Saskatchewan Canada in 1930, Sally was the oldest of six sisters. She attended nursing school with the Grey Nuns in Calgary and, upon graduation, became a nurse in the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed at Goose Bay, Newfoundland, Sally met a U.S. Army officer named William G. "Bill" Harty. They married in San Francisco, California in 1956 and remained married for 37 years, until Bill passed away in 1993. Sally and Bill had three children and six grandchildren.
During Sally's long nursing career, she cared for thousands of patients from Canada, to California, to Tennessee, to New Mexico. Her patients ranged from astronauts to neighbors and friends. She spent a large part of her nursing career working for the New Mexico Department of Public Health as public health nurse in Bernalillo County and Chaves County, where she cared for, immunized, and taught generations of young mothers and fathers, children and the elderly.
After retiring, Sally pursued her other passions - traveling, visiting family and friends, and spoiling her grandchildren. And, even with her busy traveling schedule, she routinely volunteered at the Hagerman Joy Center, where she took blood pressures and monitored the health of her friends. Her compassion and love for people guided every aspect of her life.
Sally is survived by her daughters Suzanne Forest of Columbia Maryland and Hillary Harty-Kalisek of Dexter, New Mexico and her son Will of Williamsburg, Virginia. She is also survived by her granddaughters Erin and Emilie Forest and Daisy Griffin, and her grandsons Padraic Kalisek, James Forest and Riley Harty.
Arrangements are under the personal care of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
