Marion Smith

SMITH, MARION ELLINGTON Marion Novella Smith, 86, passed away on March 1, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. She was born on March 13, 1923, in Las Vegas, NM, to Lucien H. Hoch and Novella Sawtelle Hoch. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, David H. Hoch, and a sister, Barbara A. Krug.

She graduated from Las Vegas High School and received an Associate in Science Degree from Colorado Womans College in 1943. That same year, she married Captain Roy W. Ellington.

She worked as a secretary for the American Red Cross, The Las Vegas Municipal Schools and Falls Land and Development Corporation.

In 1990, she married Norman W. Smith. They moved to Roswell in 1995. Norman predeceased her later that year.

Marion was an avid golfer and won several ladies championships at Elephant Butte Golf Course. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Senior Circle. She spent many years as a Pink Lady at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, as well as a volunteer at the UFO Museum. Marion also loved to play bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs throughout her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served on many committees.

Marion is survived by her three children: Diane Marshall of Roswell, David Ellington and wife, Marilyn, of Superior, Montana, and Dal Ellington and wife, Janie, of Alamogordo, NM six Grandchildren: Lt. COL. Brian Hedrick and wife, Michelle, of Washington DC, Shauna Mangum and husband, Wayne, of Farmington, NM, Carla Erculiani and Husband, Darin, of Lubbock, TX, Cori Rogers and husband, Ryan, of Lubbock, Tx, Elizabeth Lee and husband, Pete, of Pflugerville, TX, and D.W. Ellington and wife, Erika, of Chuckey TN fourteen great grandchildren: Moira and Charlie Hedrick, Joe, Holly, Sophie and Auburn Mangum, Brock and Reagan Erculiani, Jake, Josh and Nick Lee, and Chelsea, Dillon and Owen Ellington. She is also survived by a brotherinlaw, Roland Krug of Albuquerque, NM her nephews Dr. Marc Krug and wife, Juliet of Glen Mills, PA, and Gary Krug of Albuquerque, NM, her nieces Kristine Kline and husband, Ed and Laura Matthews and husband, Gary of Albuquerque, NM, Judith Kincheloe of Phoenix, AZ, and several great nieces and nephews. Her stepchildren, Rodney Smith and wife, Janet of Washington DC, and Becky Harrison and husband, Eddie, of Abilene, TX, also survive her.

Pallbearers will be Lt. COL Brian Hedrick, Joe Mangum, Wayne Mangum, Darin Erculani, Brock Erculiani, and Ryan Rogers. Honorary Pall Bearers will be D. W. Ellington, Roland Krug, Gary Krug, Dr. Marc Krug, Ed Kline, Gary Matthews, Pete Lee, Jake Lee, Mike and Julie Adams and Doyle Howerton.

Services will be held Friday, March 5, at 11am, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor Matt Brooks officiating, assisted by Pastor David Ellington. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mike and Julie Adams, La Villa and the staff of The Rose Garden, and Vista Care Hospice for the love and care which they provided during Marions final years and immediate last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roswell Humane Society.
