COTTON, MARY FLORIS BENNETTFuneral services are scheduled for 10:30 am, Monday, August 13,2012 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Mary Floris Bennett Cotton, age 97, who passed away on August 9, 2012 at her home. Chaplain Garth Hyde of Vista Care will officiate, with interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Floris was born June 20, 1915 in Woodson, Texas to Victor and May Waldrop who preceded her in death, as did two brothers Cecil and Aubrey Waldrop, three sisters, Fay Fox, Corene Angell, Bernice Betenbough and a stepson Larry Bennett.
Her family came to New Mexico in a covered wagon when she was one year old. Arriving in Chaves County the Waldrops homesteaded a section that adjoined the state grazing land under the caprock. Her early years were spent there.
She received her high school diploma from Tatum High School. Following graduation, Floris attended cosmetology school in Albuquerque. She then moved to Silver City where she began her career and met and married her husband Frank C. Bennett. They moved to Roswell for a year and also lived in Ruidoso and Carlsbad for a period of time before settling in Roswell in 1954. Frank preceded Floris in death in 1958.
Floris resumed her career in Cosmetology and raised four daughters. She married James Cotton in 1978. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Floris was a resident of Roswell for nearly 60 years. She owned and worked at the Plaza Beauty Salon in Roswell until she retired at the age of 74. Following retirement, Floris enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad. She was a member of the Country Club Road Church of Christ, and was active at the Adult Center and TOPS.
Floris was a loving, generous and compassionate person who was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by a sister, Virginia Scarbrough, of Alamogordo her daughters, Saundra Whiteside, of Oklahoma City, Winona Barwick and :Peggy Richburg of Roswell, Barbara Thompson of Alamogordo and a step daughter, Joyce Ziegler, of Eager, Arizona, also 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons: David Barwick, Rick Barwick, Mark Haley, Ryan Haley, John Whiteside, Kevin Trombla, Nathan Richburg, Blake Thompson, and Nick Richburg. Honorary Pallbearers will be Cal Whiteside, Ron Richburg, Harold Barwick, Jake Ziegler, Ed Scarbrough and C.G. Betenbough.
