GATELEY, MARY LOU -- Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 11, 2007. at Christs Church, for Mary Lou Gateley, age 86, of Roswell, who passed away January 8, 2007 at a local nursing home. Pastor Lonnie Owens of Christs Church will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mary Lou was born November 25, 1920, on Chickela Mountain, Arkansas, to Mettie Louember Pickens and Bertha Belle Baxter Pickens. Her parents, as well as an older sister, Wilma Pickens, preceded her in death.
Mary Lou Pickens and Robert Clinton Bob Gateley were married January 15, 1937, in Danville, Arkansas. They moved to Roswell in July, 1945. Bob passed away June 12, 2002.
Surviving Mary Lou is her daughter, Jeanie Harris, of Roswell; niece Cissy Peterson and her family of Vernon Hills and Deerfield, Illinois; John Conley and Bill MacMillan of Palm Desert, California, and Debra Herring of Santa Barbara, California.
Mary Lou was a member of Christs Church and Salty Saints Sunday School Class. During World War II, she worked at Tinker Field, an Air Force Base in Midwest City, Oklahoma. While there, she was discovered and had her fifteen minutes of fame singing on an Oklahoma City radio station.
Mary Lou retired as Secretary-Treasurer of Herring Distributing, Inc. in 1982. She was a charter member of the Roswell chapter of American Business Professional Womens Club, as well as the Roswell Toastmistress Club. Mary Lous many friends and co-workers will remember her for her entertaining stories of growing up on Chickela Mountain as well as her beautiful smile and fun-loving nature.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Salty Saints Sunday School Class.
Friends may make memorial contributions to Christs Church, the Roswell Humane Society or the charity of their choice.
