YOUNG, MELVIN MELMemorial services are scheduled for 11:00 A. M., Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at First Baptist Church for Melvin Mel Young, age 79, of Roswell who passed away January 3, 2008 at a local care center. Pastor Robert Holcomb of First Baptist Church will officiate.

Mel was born June 10, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio to Melvin, Sr. and Minnie Young. He grew up in Toledo and attended Toledo public schools. The United States was at war when Mel graduated from high school, so he enlisted in the Air Force and made a career for 24 years.

Mel was an outstanding airman and NCO and he was rewarded by his citations, commendations and promotions. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant after serving in England, Guam, Philippines, Japan and Thailand.

While stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, he met his future wife and on June 2, 1950 was married to Joyce Malone at the First Baptist Church.

Wherever the family was stationed, Mel was always involved in church, community, and youth activities. Teaching a Sunday school class or coaching a Little League team. He was president of the Roswell High School Booster Club for a year.

Mel managed the Montgomery Wards store in Roswell from 1970 until it closed in 1985. He then worked several years for Ray Bell Oil.

Mel belonged to the First Baptist Church, St. Johns Sunday School class, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Eastern New Mexico Senior Golf Association. Mel was an avid golfer and loved playing as often as possible with his golfing buddies. Honorary Pallbearers will be those special friends.

Mel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; sons: Mark and wife Victoria of San Diego, CA; and Randy Young of Roswell, NM; brother: Howard Young and wife Sharon of Toledo, OH; sisters: Dora Fullington of Toledo, OH; and Joyce Jamison of Atlanta, GA ;three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
