Menza (Ira) Holden Fleming passed away Sunday night, May 21, 2017 at the Mission Arch Care Center in Roswell, NM. She had been in the facility for about two years for Alzheimer's treatment. Visitation 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery. Pastor Lonnie Owens and Pastor Gerry Chaves of Christ's Church will be officiating.
Menza Fleming was born to Leo and Geneva Holden on September 25, 1935, in Jones County TX. She graduated as valedictorian of the Avoca High School class of 1954. She graduated magna cum laude from Texas Christian Unversity ( TCU) in 1962 with a Bachelor's degree in secondary education.
Meanwhile she met and married Elvis E. Fleming, and they both became secondary school teachers. Menza is survived by her husband, their daughter Fran Gustafson of Hillsboro, OR, and their son Edward Fleming of Roswell. Also she is survived by four grandchildren: Rikki Gustafson and Nicholas Gustafson, Christina Fleming, and Tabitha Ortega. Three great-granchildren: Jeremiah Medina, Josiah Medina, and Isla Medina.
Menza had a long and distinguished career as a teacher. She taught at Morton High School, Morton TX; and Gateway Christian School in Roswell, retiring in 1996.
Menza was active as a teacher and in other roles in all of the churches that her family attended during her 48-year sojourn in Roswell: First Baptist, 1969-1978; Gateway Baptist, 1978-1996; and Christ's Church, 1996-2017.
Mrs. Fleming was a published writer, with several articles to her credit, as well as a novel, The Savage: A Christian Historical Novel (2003).
