Millie was born in Abernathy, Texas on August 23, 1917. She moved to Carlsbad in 1930 where she met and married Oran H. Smith on February 11, 1933. She was a nurturing mom whose first love was her two sons. She and Oran were determined that their sons would attend college. Millie ran Carter Tobacco Company while Oran served in World War II. Upon Orans return, she stayed at home to raise her beloved boys. When her sons went to college, she worked as a bookkeeper for Marshs apparel store for six years. Then she joined the love of her life in running their business, Smith Distributing Company for thirty years.
Following retirement, she and Oran enjoyed traveling and playing golf. Wanting to be nearer to their grandchildren, they moved to Roswell 25 years ago. They quickly became active in the community, church, and could be seen often on the golf course. Millie was an avid golfer for 45 years and loved her lady-golf friends and monthly luncheons.
