Modean was born on July 21, 1927 in Lohn, Texas, to Robert Long Butler and Grace Roberts Butler. She was the second of ten children. The family moved to Kerrville, Texas, when she was very young and she grew up there. She married Preston Lee Stone on December 24, 1943 in Kerrville, Texas. Although reared in town, she quickly adapted to the ranch life that came with marriage to Preston and grew to love it. They lived in Texas until moving to New Mexico in 1957. Preston and Modean were married a few months less than sixty years when he died in 2003.
Modean was known for her delicious meals and enjoyed cooking for others. Her desserts and fresh baked breads were a favorite of those who joined her table, a result of the time she spent working in a bakery as a teenager. She enjoyed playing dominoes and card games, especially canasta, with friends and family, and seldom turned down an invitation to play. Although she had not sewed in the last several years, she was a talented seamstress making anything from formals to suits. She enjoyed reading, especially nonfiction. If asked what was important to her, she would tell you, after her faith, her family was most important. She also cherished her friends and considered them extended family.
Modean was preceded in death by her parents, as well as two sisters, Lola May Butler and Roberta Butler Robinett, and a brother, Robert L. Butler, Jr.
