Norman R. Smith, 76, passed away December 8, 2008. He was born in Dexter, New Mexico August 25, 1932 and raised on his families farm in East Grand Plains. He was preceded in death by his parents J. Russell and Agnes McMains Smith.
Norman attended New Mexico Military Institute, and New Mexico State University.
He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Miller and her husband Ron of Roswell, NM, Sandra Koonce and her husband Neal, of Houston, TX, Susan Douvry and her husband Peter of Cypress, TX; grandsons Ryan Miller and his wife Nicole, Randy Miller all of Roswell, NM, Stephen and Christopher Douvry of Cypress, TX; Great Grandchildren Colton and Nadia Miller of Roswell, NM, he is also survived by three stepsons that he loved very much. Gary Stephens and his companion Joe Blomberg of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Kim Stephens and his wife Allison, Clyde Stephens and his companion Rick Boling. Step-Grandchildren Michelle and Tanner Stephens all of Ft. Myers. His sisters Beverly Burton, and her husband Don, Cheryl Smith- Spiedell and her husband Steve all of Houston, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
He spent many years as a farmer and in agriculture related sales. He was involved in many civic organizations, Charter Member of East Grand BRPlains Lions Club, 4-H, Boy Scout Leader, Jaycees, East Grand Plains Volunteer Fire Department, Elks Lodge BPOE, Farm Bureau, Masons and The Shrine Temple.
He learned to fly at an early age and never lost his love of flying. His passion for travel was cut short due to his need for dialysis which was a big disappointment for him. He never met a stranger; he loved life, and had many wonderful friends all over the country. Several very special friends in Ruidoso helped him survive as long as he did with his serious illness this past year, and the family thanks you for all your support. A special thanks to the Mescalaro Care Center and the Mescalaro Dialysis Center for your loving care.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, December 16, 2008 at New Mexico Military Institute Chapel, Roswell, NM. Private family interment of his cremains will be held at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.BRBR
