Oran was born in Gatesville, TX, September 1, 1912, where he spent his childhood. He moved to Carlsbad, NM in 1930 where he met and married Millie Thomas February 11, 1933.
He proudly served in the US Navy in WWII during the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. After the war he returned to his family in Carlsbad, where he was branch manager of Carter Tobacco Co. of El Paso. Later he started his own wholesale business, Smith Distributing Company in Carlsbad.
He was very active in the Carlsbad community including Kiwanis, Masons and Shriners. He was proud to have been one of the original fund raisers for the Landsun Methodist Homes where he has lived the past two years. He was also instrumental in raising funds to build the new sanctuary at the First Methodist Church of Carlsbad.
Following retirement, he and Millie enjoyed traveling and playing golf. However, wanting to be nearer the grand children, they moved to Roswell 25 years ago. They enjoyed all the family gathering and being near family with their son Bob and his wife Sue. They could always be seen on Sunday in church at First United Methodist Church of Roswell, where they were members. They were both avid golfers and enjoyed the friendships made during the many years of playing.
Oran is survived by his wife of 76 years, Millie T. Smith of Landsun Homes in Carlsbad, NM. They have two sons, Dr. Troy H. Smith and his companion Luca Carbone of Fresno, CA, son, Dr. Robert Smith and his wife Sue of Roswell, NM. A grand daughter, Melissa Williams and her husband Sean and great-grand children Landen, Truett and Ava Grace Williams of Prosper, TX and a grand son Robert T. Smith, II of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his niece Sandra Kay Smith Eatmon and her husband Dr. Rex Eatmon of Frisco, TX; also a brother-in-law H.S. Thomas of Rowlett, TX.
It was Orans request that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to either Landsun Homes, Inc, 2002 Westridge Rd, Carlsbad, NM or to the Cowboy Scholarship Fund FUMC, 200 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Roswell, NM 88201.
