The nation celebrated Dicks birth with fireworks on July 4, 1919 in Lafayette, Indiana. He was the last survivor of the nine children of Jacob and Mary Vogel. From his family farm in Indiana Dick went on to business college. During World War II he volunteered to defend the country that celebrated his birth. As the pilot of B-17s and B-24s he flew 29 successful missions. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.

Training as a pilot at Roswell Army Air Field he met and fell in love with the girl of his dreams, Marilyn Janice Blea. Upon his return from overseas they were married on September 20, 1944 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Roswell. Dick and Marilyn settled in Roswell and started their family. As a well respected electrical contractor, first with Blea Electric and then Arco Electric, he earned a reputation as an ethical, trustworthy member of the community. This was due to his strong work ethic and high moral standards which he passed on to all his family. In his 61 years in Roswell Dick lived in accordance to his values, the 10 commandments and the 4 way rotary test. He was an active member of St. Peter Parish where he generously gave of his time, energy and resources. Dick served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. As a Rotarian he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. His love of music and humor led him to be a founding member of The Roswell Liver Spots. A gifted athlete and avid outdoorsman, Dick spent many hours playing as hard as he worked. Fishing and fish stories were his greatest passion. He instilled in all his family a great respect, regard and love for all Creation.

Dick loved God, loved life and loved his family. He was the kind of man that every boy wishes he could grow up to be and that every man on his death bed wishes he had been.

Yes Dad, with your help we can get home from here.
