Robert Bob Akin, 60, passed away, surrounded by his family, September 23, 2009.

A Rosary will be prayed at 7 pm. Monday, September 28, 2009, at St. Peter Church, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Fr. Joe Nelson will officiate.

Bob was born November 3, 1948 to Richard and Mary Akin in San Diego, California. His father preceded him in death. Bob is survived by his wife, Rosa, of the family home, five sons; John, Robert Jr. and his wife, Marsha, Larry and his wife, Beth, Raphael and William; two daughters; Andrea Gonzales and husband, Fred, and Mariah Akin and fianc, Frank, all of Roswell; his mother Mary, and two sisters, Connie Hayes and Bonnie Heller, all of California. He is survived, also, by eight grandchildren.

Bob served in Vietnam with the Army for three consecutive years, 1969-1972, in the 173rd Airborne Division, and earned numerous medals and commendations before he was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran. After returning from his military assignment, Bob married Rosa Lechuga in El Paso, Texas, and then relocated to California. Prior to settling in Roswell in 1993, the Akin family had lived in Oregon and Arizona. Bobs final years of employment were at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. He was devoted to his wife and family, and enjoyed riding his motorcycle to Ruidoso to be among the mountains he loved. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
