Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Robert Richard Rich Sims, who passed away March 4, 2012 in Queen, New Mexico. Robert Tyler Sims will officiate with burial to be at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn, NM.
Robert was born on December 3, 1929 in Pastura, New Mexico to George E. Sims and Wahlecia Dell Blackwell Sims. They have preceded him in death as well as his first wife, Pat Klingensmith, three brothers, George Tommy Sims, Edgar Joe Sims, and Albert Dee Sims.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Boles, of the family home at Queen, NM three daughters: Robin Norris and her husband Jeff, of Chandler, AZ, Mikie Sims of Chandler, AZ, Shelley Scott, of Queen brother: Dr. James Rae Sims of Bozeman, MT sister: Betty Sims Solt of Roswell, NM He is also survived by grandsons: Josh Norris and his wife Jessica, Hunter Norris, Robert Tyler Sims and his wife Andrea and Zane Moody and his wife Gisele granddaughters: Meghan George and her husband Chris and Kayla Walker Aguilera and her husband Raul great grandchildren, Josh Norris, Jr., Ariel Moody, Robert Tyler Sims, Jr., and Urijah Aguilera.
Robert attended school at Pastura and Santa Rosa High School receiving his diploma in 2007 under a special Veterans program for WWII and Korean War Veterans who enlisted before graduation and served their country honorably during the Wars. He served his country during both wars, enlisting in the US Army Corps in 194649, then reenlisted in the Army Air force in 195154. He controlled and executed the ordering and transferring of all bombs and ammunition to our forces in the Pacific.
He also attended college at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and NM Highlands University Las Vegas, New Mexico.
He was in the Boy Scouts of America and received the Life Scout award. He helped run the family ranch and then joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association RCA and competed in bronc riding, bull riding, and bulldogging. In 1942 at age 13, he split first place in bull riding with Fuzzy Garner at the Teddy Roosevelt Rough Riders Reunion,. In 1952 at the New Mexico State Fair Grounds he won part of the bareback bronc riding, beating World Champion Casey Tibbs.
In 1989 he organized and operated Sims State Wide Insurance Company and was very successful. He wrote and published two books of Sims family history and early day New MexicoThe Way it TWer and Long in the Tooth The New Texicans.
