Robert Bob Stephens, 82, died in his sleep of natural causes on February
28, 2008 at his home at Capitan, NM. He was born in Tularosa, NM, Aug 19, 1925 a
descendant of four pioneer ranching families. Immediately after high school,
he fought in major battles during World War II with the 4th
ision marines. He was shot in battle and waded ashore under fire and fought on the beaches of Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo
Jima as a United States Marine in the South Pacific.
At his place in Capitan, he particularly enjoyed and regularly hosted annual
picnics for veterans of the US Marine Corps. He also served in several
capacities and occasionally as a spokesman for the American Legion. After
his career as an engineer with the New Mexico Highway Department in Roswell, NM, he retired to his 40 acres near Capitan and enjoyed raising sheep along with a few chickens and peacocks. He and his wife were well known as good citizens of the area and were members of the First Baptist Church in Ruidoso. His wife of 50 years, Thelma Stephens, who was a
retired nurse and who won many blue ribbons her vegetables at the Lincoln
County Fair, also passed away very recently on February 1, 2008.
They are survived by two sons and their wives, Tommy and Debbie Stephens
of Capitan and Israel Steve and Lisa Stephens of Roswell, NM; 7 grandchildren; 9 greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 5, 2008
at the La Grone Funeral Chapel, located at 900 South Main, Roswell, NM.
