Stephen W. Marshall passed away on Friday February 5, 2016 after a brave fight with multiple cancers for a number of years.
A memorial service is to take place at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, with Father Dale Plummer officiating, at 2:00 P.M. Saturday February 13, 2016. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
Stephen was born to Dr. Steve Marshall and Jewel Watson Marshall, on November 3, 1940 in Roswell, NM. He grew up in Roswell and graduated from Roswell High School, Class of 1959. He was on the Roswell High track and field team as well as the Varsity football team.
In 1963, Stephen obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX. At Hardin-Simmons he was on the track and field team (javelin) all four years
Following graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force and worked as a biochemist. After the service, he worked as a research chemist for the U.S. Geological Survey, focusing on water hydrology. He furthered his education at the University of Texas - Permian Basin, obtaining his Masters of Business Administration (MBA).
For 20 years Stephen worked in Odessa, TX both as a bank trust officer and as a stock broker. After moving back to Roswell, he taught for many years at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell; for two years he also taught classes at the New Mexico Youth Challenge and spent time teaching for the Roswell Literacy Council. He was on the Board of the Roswell Literacy Council until his death.
In his leisure time, Stephen always enjoyed staying active: both in high school and college as a member of the track and field team. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid golfer. Almost daily, you would find him at the Spring River Golf Course (now the Nancy Lopez Golf Course). To maintain fitness, he always carried his golf bag.
He was predeceased by his son Christopher Stephen Marshall, age 6, and by his parents. Stephen is survived by his daughter Shannon Marshall Kelly and her husband Tony of Downers Grove, Illinois; sister Melinda Marshall Kardon and her husband Sol of Dallas Texas; nephew Craig Kardon, niece Kimberly Kardon Hatley and her husband John and their children Amanda and Marshall Hatley of Coppell, Texas. Also surviving is Diana Hillman Marshall, the mother of his children, Christopher and Shannon.
Stephen leaves a special thank you to each of the following: Dixie Edwards at Merrill Lynch, Dr. Braik with Kymera for all his professional care; and especially Phil in the chemotherapy department. Thanks to Dr. Peter Jewell and his staff for their extra support and care. And it takes a special person to provide never ending constant loving and caring support. The family and Stephen gratefully thank Lynda Woodruff.
Per Stephen's request, he has been cremated.
