Tommy Britt

BRITT, TOMMY J. A Funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Tommy J. Britt age 73, of Dexter who passed away on January 3, 2014. Rev. Richard Smith with Bethel Baptist Church and Mathew Skariah will officiate. Military Honors will be provided by the Roswell Veterans Honor Guard.

Tommy was born to Thomas Henry and Myrtle Payton Britt on December 11, 1940 south of Lake Arthur, NM. He worked hard with his family, from picking cotton as a child to going with his daddy and driving a truck at the age of twelve. He could do and fix just about anything. He loved driving trucks and running heavy equipment. His strong work ethic was such that people would request that he be the one to do their job. It was important to him that he work with excellence. He dug the basement of Goddard High School and the Sunwest building. Tommy retired from the Chaves County Road Department in 2001, freeing him to do things he cherished in life. Some of these things were his love in studying and sharing Gods word, spending time with this family, watching his grandson play sports, singing, fishing, camping, gardening, working with wood, and making something special with his hands. He made the crosses in front of Highland Baptist Church.

Tommy had great appreciation for the simple things in life. He loved the earth and the smell of her after a rain, the sound of a running brook, early morning coffee on the front porch, sitting in a chair in the yard to spray and water it himself forget the sprinkler, sleeping under the stars, and gazing at any wonder the Lord had made.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Geneva of Dexter, who on June 5th 1959 he wed and built a life of 54 years together, his daughter Lenora Bowles and her husband Robert of Dexter, his beloved grandson Joseph Bowles of Dexter and his fianc, Holly Craig of Roswell, sisters Edna Herring of Roswell, Ruth Howell and husband Duane of Lubbock, Texas, brother Hank Britt and his wife Elaine of Dexter, Richard Smith a friend as close as a brother and his wife Sue of Roswell, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death and touching him in life were his parents, two brothers, Henry Britt, and John Britt, and two sisters, Helen Britt and Alice Allison.

A special Thank you to Dr. Braik and the many health care providers who saw every need and worked with compassion to make having cancer easier to bear, for those of you who took the time to pray with and for him, nurses who sat with him drinking a cup of coffee and taking time to chat when he would wake in the night. You were a special light through the process.

Humming this song in his sleep just a week or so before he left us we know he was looking for his new day. What a day that will be, when my Jesus I will see. When I look upon His face, the one who saved me by His grace. When He takes me by the hand, and leads me to the promise land What a day, glorious day that will be. Your day has finally come, and only rejoicing remains.
