MARTIN, JR., DETECTIVE VALERIAN A Rosary will be said at 7:00 PM, Monday, December 26, 2011, at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, for Valerian Martin Jr., age 87, who passed away December 18, 2011, at University Medical Center in Albuquerque. The Resurrection Mass will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at St. Peters Catholic Church, with Fr. Juan Antonio Gutierrez officiating. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery. The Roswell Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors at the Cemetery.
Valerian was born August 3, 1924 in Whitman, West Virginia, to Valeriano Verde, and Juana Martin.
He married Barbara Trohanovsky on June 18, 1949 in New York City. She survives him at the family home.
He was appointed on June 13, 1956 as a Patrolman into the New York City Police Department, became a detective in the Intelligence Division protecting dignitaries such as President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, Spiro Agnew, Shirley Temple Black, Fidel Castro, The Ambassador of Bolivia, among others. He served on the NYPD for over 20 years.
He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, a member of the American Legion, and a member of the Senior Circle. He was a member of the Detectives Endowment Association of the NYPD. He was an Amateur Radio Operator, a member of the Honor Legion of the Police Department of the City of New York since 1964. He served as a TAC Officer at NMMI from 19801982. He was a Veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a life member of the Reserved Officers Association of the United States. He was commissioned to Major in the New Mexico State Guard in August 1978 and was promoted to Colonel in February 1983.
Survivors include a daughter Susan Ann Martin of Branson, Missouri, a son Val Martin III of Port Jervis, New York, and one grandson Daniel Michael Martin of Port Jervis, New York.
