HENDERSON, VERA ELLEN Services for Vera Ellen Henderson, age 98, who passed away December 1, 2007 at her home in Roswell, will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 11:00 A. M. at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Archie Echols officiating. Interment will be at South Park Cemetery.
Vera had been resident of Roswell since 1941. She was born July 20, 1909 in Elk County, Kansas to Mary Ellen Kammer Bruton and Addington G. Bruton. She was united in marriage to Loren Edward Henderson, January 17, 1931 in Fredonia, Kansas. To this union two children, Stephen Loren and Ellen Kay, were born.
She graduated from Severy High School in Severy, Kansas, class of 1927, and attended the Pittsburg State College at Pittsburg, Kansas. She taught school in Kansas at Kenbro. Vera and Loren were living in Amarillo, Texas when he accepted a position in 1941 with D. J. Schrecengost Company in Roswell, New Mexico.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as communion preparer for 25 years; Social Order of the Beauceants Chapter 116, Morning Book Club, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary and was active in the Assistance League of Chaves County since 1976 where she served in many different capacities, but most recently until December 2005 in Thrift evaluation and pricing at the Leagues Thrift Shop. In 2002, she received the Ada Edwards Laughlin Award by the Assistance League of Chaves County in recognition of her many years of service as a loyal, dedicated, hard working and respected member.
When her children were young, she was always involved in their activities. She had served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout Troup leader.
She was an avid and very successful bridge player. She loved to travel around the world, having visited all fifty states and 30 countries, several more than once.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Loren E. Henderson in 1974; her parents, Mary Ellen and Add Bruton; sisters, Mae Rhoads, Edna Snowden, Juanita Yandell and two brothers, Addington K. Bruton and Charles K. Bruton.
