MITCHELL, VIDA V.

Longtime Roswell resident, Vida V. Mitchell, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, February 24th. Born in Gallup on August 1st, 1927, Vida is preceded in death by her parents Peter J. and Lucille Vidal, two sisters, Evadean Dee Dee and Phyllis, and her husband Bob.

Vida spent her childhood years in Gallup. Upon graduation from high school, she attended The University of New Mexico where she earned a degree in education and became a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. After completion of her studies at UNM she moved to Roswell and became an elementary school teacher. Education remained a passion for her throughout her life.

In 1951 she met and fell in love with Roswell native and businessman, Robert W. Bob Mitchell, Jr. They were married on June 7th, 1952 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. Together, they owned Mitchells Pharmacy and the Medicine Shop until Bobs death in 1981.

Vida was active in the Roswell Assistance League, Tango Club, Roswell Public Library and many other civic and social organizations. She was an avid tennis player, bridge master, and a great fan of horse racing and the arts.

She is survived by her, two sons, Robert and Peter, beloved nephew, Phillip, two grandchildren, Robert RK and Alexandra, two grand nieces, Courtney and Megan, great grand niece Peyton, and a brother Carl Vidal as well as many other nieces and nephews all of whom she loved dearly. To all of the Madison Avenue kids, you always had a special place in her heart and you brought great joy to her life. We will all miss her.

Donations in her honor may be made to the Roswell Literacy Council, Roswell Public Library, or Meals On Wheels.

Graveside services will be held at South Park Cemetery at 11:45 on Saturday, March 1st and will be officiated by Father Bill McCann of Assumption Catholic Church. Following the service a reception celebrating her life will be held at her home.
