Wanda M. DeShurley: Funeral services are scheduled at 10 am, Friday, February 24, 2012, at First United Methodist Church for Wanda M. DeShurley, 90, who passed away on February 17, 2012. The Rev. Vern Edmondson, of Ruidoso, will officiate. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery.
Wanda was born August 25, 1921 in Soper, Oklahoma to Mills and Pearl Harris. After being raised and educated in Hobbs, NM she came to Roswell to work for the US Army Corps of Engineers as they were building the Roswell Army Air Field later renamed Walker Air Force Base, where she ultimately became the private secretary to the Project Engineer. While working at the base she met and later married Harold DeShurley. They were married in Norman, OK on November 10, 1942. Shortly after the birth of their son, George Robert DeShurley, they were transferred to El Segundo, CA where they stayed until the end of the war. Upon leaving the service in the US Navy, the DeShurleys moved back to Roswell and began the family business of DeShurley Construction Company. Wanda worked as the SecretaryTreasurer at the construction company for the 56 years it was in business.
Wanda enjoyed playing golf where she was a city wide champion twice as well as playing bridge and traveling with De. She very much enjoyed her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Wanda dedicated much of her time serving on the boards of and volunteering at the Morning Garden Club, the Roswell Literacy Council, the Chaves County J.O.Y. Center and the Community Kitchen. Wanda was a member of the Gold Star Mothers and very involved in the Adopt a Highway program. She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Roswell and an Honorary member of the Roswell Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Wanda was surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully in Lubbock, Texas. She is survived by her grandchildren, George Robert DeShurley, II and his wife Brenda of Houston, TX and Laura Weddige and her husband Von, of Hope, NM. Greatgrandchildren, Annabeth, Sarah and George Robert DeShurley, III Trey DeShurley and Emily and Justin Weddige. She is also survived by her sisters Roberta Jackie Hollis of Casper, WY, Billye Irion of Rio Rancho, NM and Peggy Long and her husband Travis of Ceres, CA. Also surviving her are numerous nieces and nephews, grand and greatgrand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son who was killed in Vietnam in 1968. Also preceding her were sisters, Zuemack Susie Dillard and Sally Lupardus.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Chaves County J.O.Y. Center, 1822 N. Montana, Roswell, NM 88201.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
