MAYES, WILLIAM MEL Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2013 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for William Mel Mayes, age 79, of Roswell who went to be with the Lord on February 20, 2013. Pastor Jerry Beaver of Tabernacle Baptist Church will officiate with interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Mel was born March 12, 1933 in Roswell to Thomas H. and Sara K Mayes. Both his parents have preceded him in death as well as his brothers W.H. Sonny Boy, Donald, Cleo and Neil Mayes.
Mel married Vickie in Roswell on March 2, 1956. She survives him at the family home.
Mel is also survived by three sons: Michael Mayes and his wife Bonnie, Gary Mayes and his wife Christine and Dennis Mayes all of Roswell daughter: Sharon Woods of Ft. Worth, Texas two brothers Vernon Mayes and his wife Velma of Dumas, Texas, Jim Mayes of Dexter three sisters: Nora George and her husband Art of Killeen, Texas, Mavis Wilson of Lufkin, Texas, Melva Graveline and husband Bennie of Roswell eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces.
Mel served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Returning home he went to work for George Glass Electric. In 1967 he went to work for Transwestern until his retirement in 1992. He started Mayes Electric in 1980 owning and operating it until 2012.
He was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church
