SNIPES, WILLIAM ALVIS--Memorial Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 27th, at First United Methodist Church for William Al Alvis Snipes, age 87, of Roswell, who passed away June 21, 2007. Reverend Archie Echols of First United Methodist Church will officiate.

Al a former Chaves County Commissioner, was selected New Mexico Sheepman of the year in 1987, selected as Citizen of the Year by the Roswell Realtors Assn., Lifetime Achievement Award from Leadership Roswell: he served his community in many different roles, such as member of the Chamber of Commerce Presidents Club Red Coats, President of Miss Wool of New Mexico Pageant, past President of Wool Growers Assn., served as a member of the Eastern New Mexico State Fair Board, and was the Grand Marshall of the Eastern New Mexico State Fair Parade, Chairman of the Wool Bowl, Chairman of the National Polio Foundation for Chaves County, Chairman of the Chaves County United Way, Chairman of the Salvation Army Board, Chairman of the YMCA Board, Chairman of Rio Hondo District Boy Scouts, and Treasurer of ENMU-R Foundation. He was currently serving as the Treasurer of Snipes Family of America. Al a longtime area rancher and banker graduated from Roswell High School in 1937 received his B.S from Woodbury College, M.S. from Eastern New Mexico University. Al served in the United States Army Air Force as a cryptographic technician and was the manager of the Roswell Ford Company in 1946.

Al was born in Roswell, New Mexico August 21, 1919 to Frank and Helen Snipes who preceded him in death. Three sisters, Mrs. Helen Hymes, Mrs. Ella Snodgrass, Mrs. Frances Green, and his first wife Mrs. Dolores Farnsworth Snipes and one grandson William Dee Melton also precede him in death. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Phyllis Snipes of the home, one brother Joe Snipes and wife Vera of Florida, daughters Marsha Melton and husband Dee of Odessa TX., Lynn Allensworth and husband John, and one son Bill Snipes and wife Pat, both of Roswell: grandchildren Bill Snipes and wife Christy, Dale Snipes and wife Kim, Dolores Snipes, Lynn Daleske and husband Rob, Jenine Kuss and husband Mark, Derrick Melton and wife Stephanie, Todd Allensworth and wife Sandy, and Scott Allensworth, and eighteen great grandchildren.

Al was also preceded in death by stepson, Steve Fennell, and is survived by stepchildren, Ron Fennell and wife Alice of Flagstaff, Ariz., Bill Fennell and wife Ruth of Houston, and Fred Fennell and wife Lynette of Dallas Texas, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 11 El Arco Iris Dr, Roswell.
